If you have your own vehicle and you want to take your baby out for a ride, then you will need to install a car seat specifically for them. It is arguably one of the most important purchases you can make for your toddler because you will be riding with them pretty much anywhere you go.

This article should provide you with the information that you need to buy the right car seat for your child. So, stock up on some baby diapers and head out to buy the best car seats for your baby.

Three Types of Car Seats

There are three major types of car seats that you can choose from. These are the rear-facing, forward-facing, and convertibles.
But there are also sub-types as well which I will discuss further below.

  • Infant-Only Car Seat- Deemed to be the most convenient as you can just remove the carrier without removing everything else. You can put a baby that is below 22 pounds on this one. This is probably the most convenient car seat given that you can just put them on in the car or on a stroller. However, the biggest limitation is the weight limit because when a baby is over 22 pounds, you cannot use this anymore.
  • Convertible Car Seat- This is the type of seat that is installed as a rear-facing seat and then switch over as the baby grows older. It should be set to face the rear for more than two years and only change it once they grow older. If you want a car seat that will last for a really long time, you want to get this.
  • Forward-Facing Only Car Seat- This is the usual configuration when your baby weighs more than 22 pounds but it also has a limit of 65 pounds. When buying this type of car seat, make sure that you refer to your car’s manual to see the one you’re going to buy fits perfectly since not all car seats support all types of front-facing variants.
  • Combination Car Seat- This type of car seat allows you to utilize a harness until your child reaches 65 pounds. If they do reach the threshold, you can safely remove the harness and use the car’s seat belt instead. This seat can be used until your child is 100 pounds.
  • Belt-Positioning Booster- This is the type of car seat that should be used by kids aged 3-5 or if they reach a total of 100 pounds.

When Getting a Car Seat

When you buy a convertible, make sure that you put it on rear-facing for as long as possible. That is because the American Pediatrics Association actually recommends it for your child. Typically, you want it to be oriented that way until your child reaches 2 years of age.

As your child grows older, you should slowly transition to a forward-facing car seat and make sure that you read the instructions so that you will know when to remove the belts and harnesses that are included in the package.
